Running a business in India means meeting several statutory deadlines every month, every quarter and every year. Each one is simple on its own; together they need a clear calendar and accurate books. Missing them leads to interest, late fees and notices that take far longer to resolve than the original filing.
GST
- Periodic returns. Most registered businesses file GSTR-1 (outward supplies) and GSTR-3B (summary return with tax payment) every month. Eligible small taxpayers can opt for quarterly filing under the QRMP scheme.
- Input tax credit. Credit should be reconciled regularly with the auto-generated GSTR-2B, so that credit is claimed only where the supplier has reported the invoice.
- Annual return. GSTR-9 summarises the year, and GSTR-9C reconciles the GST returns with the audited books for businesses above the prescribed turnover limit.
TDS and TCS
Tax deducted or collected must be deposited every month, and quarterly statements must be filed so that the deductee receives credit. Errors in PAN, challan details or the section applied are a common source of mismatches. With the Income-tax Act, 2025 in force from 1 April 2026, it is also worth reviewing that the correct provisions and references are being applied in your systems.
Payroll compliances
Businesses with employees handle Provident Fund, Employees' State Insurance and Professional Tax every month, along with the related registrations and returns. Labour law registrations, factory licences and shop establishment registration also need to be kept current.
